Xi'an in 3 days — city plus a Mount Hua day trip
Three days lets you do the city properly and still take one mountain day trip without rushing. Days 1–2 cover the army, the wall and the museums; day 3 is Mount Hua, the sacred peak 120 km east, easy by high-speed rail.
Set up Alipay for metro QR, DiDi and bikes. Book the Terracotta Army real-name ticket before you fly. For day 3, buy HSR tickets to Mount Hua (Huashan) a few days ahead on Trip.com or the 12306-style apps — peak-season seats fill. The Shaanxi History Museum is reservation-only and closed Mondays.
Day 1 — Terracotta Army & Huaqing Hot Springs
Same as the 2-day plan: the east-side headline sights.
- 08:00 Terracotta Army 3 hr — book ahead; pits and the bronze chariots.
- 12:00 Lunch near the army Simple noodle shops by the lot.
- 13:30 Huaqing Hot Springs 2 hr — Tang imperial pools and the foothills.
- 17:00 Return to the core Bus or Didi back to the Bell Tower.
- 19:00 Muslim Quarter 1.5 hr — dinner and the night market.
Day 2 — City Wall, museums & the Muslim Quarter
The city core: ramparts, Tang gold and the old lanes.
- 09:00 Shaanxi History Museum 2.5 hr — free, reservation-only. Closed Mondays.
- 12:00 Big Wild Goose Pagoda 1.5 hr — climb the pagoda, then the square.
- 14:30 Xi'an City Wall 2 hr — rent a bike at the South Gate.
- 17:30 Bell Tower + Drum Tower 1 hr — the twin landmarks at dusk.
- 19:00 Muslim Quarter Late walk through the lantern-lit lanes.
Day 3 — Mount Hua day trip
The sacred peak, ~1 hr east by high-speed rail from Xi'an North.
- 07:30 HSR to Mount Hua (Huashan) ~30–50 min from Xi'an North; tourist bus to the cable car.
- 09:00 Mount Hua 5–6 hr — cable car up, walk the peaks, or climb the steps. Not for vertigo.
- 16:00 HSR back to Xi'an Dinner near the Bell Tower.
Practical notes
- Day 3 is the mountain, not the city. Mount Hua is a full day; save leftover city sights for days 1–2.
- Trains fill early. Buy day-3 HSR seats to Huashan a few days ahead; the tourist buses at the station are frequent.
- Mount Hua is strenuous. Use the cable car if unsure; the plank walk is optional and not for everyone.
- Keep the army on day 1. It is the one fixed booking; the rest flexes around Monday closures.
Shorter stay? See the 1-day or 2-day plan, or return to the Xi'an hub.
