Xi'an itineraries

Xi'an in 1 day — pick your route

One day is enough for the headline sights if you choose well. The Terracotta Army is 40 km east, so the trick is to anchor at the Bell Tower core and give the army its own half-day. Below are five ready-made loops — choose by what you care about most.

Before you leave the hotel

Set up Alipay with an international card and passport verification — it runs the metro QR, DiDi ride-hail and the shared bikes. If your day includes the Terracotta Army, book the real-name timed ticket online before you go; foreign passports are accepted. Carry your passport for the ticket turnstiles.

Route A — Highlights: Terracotta, Wall & food

The postcard loop: the army, the wall and the Muslim Quarter.

  1. 08:00 Terracotta Army 3 hr — book ahead; the pits and the bronze chariots. Take the airport-expressway tourist bus back.
  2. 12:30 Lunch near the Bell Tower Roujiamo and biangbiang noodles in the core.
  3. 14:00 Xi'an City Wall 2 hr — rent a bike and ride the 14 km loop; enter at the South Gate.
  4. 17:00 Muslim Quarter 1.5 hr — street food and the night market, best after dusk.
  5. 19:30 Bell Tower at night Lit up from the square; the view from outside is free.
