Zhangjiajie: book days ahead or don't come
Zhangjiajie is the one destination on this site where the booking system, not the price, decides whether you see anything. Walk-up windows barely sell tickets; peak-season slots for Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain go in minutes through the 张家界一机游 mini-program. Book three to seven days ahead — earlier for National Day — and understand the shape of what you are buying: one 4-day multi-entry pass for the whole forest park, and a ¥288 package, not the ¥72 "ticket", for Tianmen.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park - the 'Avatar Mountains' core of the Wulingyuan UNESCO World Heritage site - charges a single flat ¥165 gate ticket valid 4 consecutive days (the old peak/off-peak price split was abolished on 1 Jan 2025), or ¥236 for the park + eco-bus combo pass, also valid 4 days; the ¥3 accident insurance is optional. Open 07:00-17:00 (from 06:30 on public holidays). Entry is through five gates (East, South, West, North, Middle). Advance real-name booking via the official WeChat mini-program 'Zhangjiajie Yiji You' (张家界一机游) is effectively mandatory - walk-up windows barely sell tickets in peak season. The ¥83 / ¥119 discounted tickets require Chinese-issued ID; foreign passport holders pay full price.

张家界武陵源旅游官方网站(湖南省发改委湘发改价费规〔2024〕977号、张家界市发改委张发改价费〔2025〕33号) ⚠️ Conflict: Ctrip lists ¥234-239 for the 4-day park + eco-bus ticket (service fees / different bundles) - the official figure is ¥236; publish the official number. ⚠️ Season: since 2025-01-01 there is NO peak/off-peak price difference (flat ¥165 all year), but crowd levels still swing enormously - summer holidays and National Day hit daily capacity limits, while the winter 'off-season' (Dec-Feb) is colder, fog often hides the views, and Chinese New Year (mid-February) is an absolute peak inside the low season. Booking mechanics: official channel is the WeChat mini-program 张家界一机游; time-slot selection is mandatory; the official site says bookings more than 10 days ahead must call the ticket centre 0744-5718833; 2026 reports say peak-season slots sell out within minutes and walk-up windows are effectively closed. A 399 'annual pass' for 2026 (original price ¥1998) was pre-sold in Dec 2025 - watch for similar promos. Foreign visitors: every discount/free category (under-14, over-65, students, etc.) requires a Chinese-issued ID; passport holders pay full price.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Tianmen Mountain's government-set gate price is only ¥72, but every visitor in practice buys a cableway-inclusive package on one of three routes (A: cableway up / mountain road down; B: road up / cableway down; C: cableway both ways) - currently listed at about ¥288 including the long summit cableway, park shuttles and Tianmen Cave escalator options (older guides cite ¥278; a ¥10 increase landed around late 2025). First cable car around 07:00-07:30, last entry 16:00, site closes by about 18:00. Time-slot reservations via the official WeChat account '张家界天门山景区' are mandatory and A-line slots sell out days ahead in peak season. The glass plank walk charges ¥5 for shoe covers (optional). Gate-ticket exemptions (under-14, over-65, students, military, disabled) require Chinese-issued ID; foreign passport holders pay the full package price.

湖南省发展和改革委员会(湘发改价费〔2025〕517号);携程/同程票务列表交叉核对套票现价 ⚠️ Price conflict (recorded in full): the only government-priced item is the ¥72 gate ticket; the visitor-facing package has no official price page. Ctrip and Ly.com both currently list ¥288 for the C-line package (¥345 with escalator + summit cable car), while 2026 travel guides still cite ¥278, and an Oct-2025 press report covered a rumoured ¥10 rise from November. Conservative published value: 'about ¥288, confirm at booking'. ⚠️ Hours conflict: Ly.com lists 08:00-19:00 (last entry 16:00); 2026 guides list peak 07:30-18:00 / off-peak 08:00-17:30 - the safe reader-facing line is 'first cable car ~07:00-07:30, last entry 16:00'. National Day 2026: A/B/C lines bookable but some time slots already full (Hunan Daily). Booking: WeChat account 张家界天门山景区 → 票务服务; face verification enforced; city-wide rules reported Oct 2026 include one free cancellation then 10% fee, and three no-shows = banned for the season. Foreign visitors: exemptions require Chinese ID; passport holders buy the standard package.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
The Glass Bridge over the Grand Canyon sells three routes: B-line ¥178 - the full canyon walk plus the glass bridge and the Shenquan Lake boat ride, free shoe covers included (the standard choice, 3-4 hours); C-line ¥128 - glass bridge only, about an hour; A-line ¥53 - canyon hiking without the bridge. Open 08:00-16:00 with last entry at 16:00. Advance time-slot booking via the 'Zhangjiajie Yiji You' mini-program is required in peak season (book 3-5 days ahead). Selfie sticks and large bags are banned on the bridge (free lockers). Free entry for under-14s and over-65s requires Chinese-issued ID plus the ¥3 insurance; foreign passport holders pay full price.

新浪旅游《大峡谷玻璃桥3条路线实测对比》(2026-10-07);携程/欣欣旅游票务列表交叉核对 ⚠️ No government price notice was found for the Grand Canyon - treat these as market prices, not 政府定价. Variants: an English Zhangjiajie fee page (cn-zhangjiajie.com, 2026) breaks B-line down as canyon ¥50 + bridge ¥125 + ¥3 insurance = ¥178 (consistent); some guides quote ¥178-219 (the higher figure bundles paid activities - zip line, elevators, slides); Ctrip lists A-line from ¥53. ⚠️ Booking: 2026 reports say on-site same-day tickets are effectively unavailable in peak season - official channel is the 张家界一机游 mini-program. Foreign visitors: child/senior exemptions require Chinese ID; passport holders pay full price. Bungee jumping (¥1,998) is sold separately. Shoe covers are already included in 2026 tickets - refuse street vendors.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Zhangjiajie attraction tickets at a glance
Official published prices. Where a season boundary exists it is named in the catch column — boundaries differ from site to site across China, and an official "off-peak" window can still be a crowded one.
| Attraction | Ticket (official) | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan core scenic area | ¥165 gate / ¥236 with eco-bus, 4 days | One 4-day multi-entry pass; choose your gate by hotel |
| Tianmen Mountain | ≈¥288 package incl. cableway | Time-slot booking; last entry 16:00 |
| Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge | ¥178 B-line (bridge + canyon) | Book ahead; selfie sticks banned; shoe covers included |
| Huanglong Cave | ¥121 incl. boat + audio guide | Cave + boat + audio combo |
¥72 is only the government-set gate price for Tianmen Mountain. The ticket everyone actually buys is the A/B/C cableway package at about ¥288 — budget for it, and know that escalator and summit-cable-car options push the same day toward ¥345.
Getting around
Wulingyuan's five gates (East, South, West, North, Middle) feed different routes — choose by hotel location, because the wrong gate can cost an hour of shuttles. Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain are the postcard pillars; Golden Whip Stream is the easy walk; Yangjiajie and Suoxiyu are the quieter extensions.
Tianmen Mountain sits at the city edge, separate from Wulingyuan; the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge are a third area again. Plan each as its own day with its own slot, not as one combined ticket.
Book 3–7 days ahead (earlier for National Day) through 张家界一机游 or the 张家界天门山景区 account; walk-up windows barely sell, and slots face-verify at the gate. The Wulingyuan ticket is one 4-consecutive-day multi-entry pass, not four day-tickets — pace the park across the days. Chinese-ID discounts rule everywhere: foreign passport holders pay full price at every Zhangjiajie site.
A day count that works
- Day 1: Tianmen Mountain — cableway up, the cliffside walkway, last entry 16:00.
- Day 2: Wulingyuan — Yuanjiajie and the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint.
- Day 3: Wulingyuan — Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whelp Stream.
- Day 4: Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge, back to the city.

Frequently asked questions
- How far ahead do I need to book Zhangjiajie?
- Three to seven days ahead through the official mini-programs, and earlier for National Day — walk-up windows barely sell tickets and peak-season slots vanish in minutes. Every site runs real-name, time-slotted reservations with face verification at the gate.
- Is the Zhangjiajie ticket really ¥72?
- No — that figure is only the government-set gate price for Tianmen Mountain. The ticket everyone actually buys is the A/B/C cableway package at about ¥288, with escalator and summit-cable-car options pushing the day toward ¥345. Wulingyuan is separately priced: ¥165 gate, or ¥236 with the eco-bus for a 4-day multi-entry pass.
- Which Wulingyuan gate should I use?
- Choose by hotel location. The five gates (East, South, West, North, Middle) feed different routes, and entering at the wrong one can cost an hour of shuttles. Most first-timers want the gate that serves Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain; the pass is valid for four consecutive days, so a wrong gate on day one is recoverable — just expensive in time.
