Wuhan: one tower, two opposite booking rules
Wuhan is the clearest example of why you check each site separately. The Yellow Crane Tower cancelled advance reservations in late 2024 — but its online pre-sale only accepts Chinese second-generation ID cards, so passport holders buy at the window. The Hubei Provincial Museum is the exact opposite: free, reservation-only, released daily at 17:18 five days ahead — and one of the few great museums where a passport booking generates a working QR code.
The Yellow Crane Tower on Snake Hill — 'the best tower under heaven' and one of the Three Great Towers of the Yangtze — costs ¥70 per adult, a price set in Wuhan's official 2026 government-priced scenic-spot list (issued by the municipal DRC). Open 08:30–18:00 with last entry 17:20. Advance reservation is no longer required: per the Wuhan Culture & Tourism Bureau (Nov 2024), 55 of the city's 57 A-level scenic areas, Yellow Crane Tower included, cancelled entry reservations. Foreign passport holders cannot use the online pre-sale (it only accepts 2nd-generation Chinese ID cards) — buy at the on-site ticket window with your passport. Half price (¥35) covers ages 6–18, full-time students (bachelor and below), 60–64 seniors and veterans; entry is free for 65+, children under 6/1.2 m, active military and disabled visitors.

武汉市发展和改革委员会《武汉市2026年度政府定价景区门票及景区内配套交通运输价格清单》(PDF公示);预约政策见武汉市文化和旅游局官方答复(2024-11-25);购票规则见黄鹤楼公园管理处公告 Price authority: Wuhan DRC's published 2026 list (fgw.wuhan.gov.cn PDF, posted 2026-04/05) lists 黄鹤楼 (武昌区, 5A) at ¥70 per visit — matches Ctrip (起售价 ¥70), 同程 (日场成人票 ¥70) and the park's own ¥70 figure. ⚠️ Hours conflict: the park's own published notice (cnhhl.com) says 08:00–18:00 with entry stopping 18:20, but all 2026 sources (Ctrip guide, trip.com guides, 同程) say 08:30–18:00 with last entry 17:20 — use the 2026 consensus and arrive before 17:20. ⚠️ Booking conflict: several 2026 travel guides still say 'reserve on the 黄鹤楼公园 WeChat account with your ID card', while the city tourism bureau's official reply says reservations were cancelled for the tower — booking online is optional, walk-up purchase is possible; same-day online tickets appear when the pre-sale quota is not full. Foreign-visitor specifics: the park's official purchase notice states online pre-purchase supports only 2nd-gen ID cards; passport / HK-Macau-Taiwan permit holders buy at the ticket service windows (票务服务处) at the three gates. Night product 《夜上黄鹤楼》 is a separate paid light-show (approx. ¥118 weekdays, ~¥150 Fri/Sun/holidays; Ctrip lists ¥120 adult / ¥70 student / ¥90 senior-military-disabled concession), 19:30–22:00 with last entry 21:30 — it does NOT include climbing the main tower and is not interchangeable with day tickets. Traps: tour-group peak 10:00–14:00; the main-tower lift is reserved for elderly, pregnant and disabled visitors (everyone else climbs); drones banned; free red-wall photo spot outside the west gate at Metro Line 5 Simenkou station exit C.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
The Hubei Provincial Museum — home of the Marquis Yi of Zeng bianzhong bronze bells (曾侯乙编钟) and the sword of Goujian — is free, but entry is strictly by advance real-name reservation only: book a timed slot up to 5 days ahead on the official WeChat account or hbww.org.cn (free tickets are released daily at 17:18; max 5 per order). Open Tuesday–Sunday, closed Mondays: Tue–Fri 09:00–17:00 (last entry 16:00), and since 2026-09-05 weekends run to 20:30 (last entry 19:30) for the new night sessions. Foreign visitors are explicitly supported: passports (and HK/Macau/Taiwan passes) are accepted booking documents, and a passport booking generates a QR code scanned at the gate with your original passport. Bianzhong concerts run 10:30/11:30/14:00/16:00 and add a 19:30 show on weekends; English guided tours are ¥200 per group (book by phone 1–7 days ahead).

湖北省博物馆官网《服务/预约须知》(hbww.org.cn)+湖北日报/荆楚网(2026-09-04夜场公告) Hours/booking source: 湖北日报 (2026-09-04) quoting the museum's official announcement — night sessions on weekends and legal holidays from 2026-09-05, closing extended to 20:30. Reservation rules from the museum's own 服务/预约须知 page: everyone except active military, fire/rescue personnel, disabled visitors and 65+ seniors must reserve online and present the ORIGINAL document registered at booking; passport holders get a QR code for handheld-scanner entry; under-6 children must be added to the booking by a guardian (bendibao's Aug 2026 claim that under-6s need no reservation conflicts with the official page — follow the museum). Three no-shows within six months trigger a six-month booking ban. Foreign-visitor extras (per 湖北日报 2025-04-30): the museum upgraded to 10+ document types incl. passports and foreign permanent-residence IDs, runs a bilingual sign system, offers a waitlist (候补) for full slots, and lets overseas tour groups book up to two years ahead. Traps: scalpers sell museum 'tickets' that are just reservations — the museum has never authorized any third party; no same-day walk-in for general visitors; weekend slots sell out within minutes of the 17:18 release, so set an alarm. East gate is for teams; use north gate (public transport) or south gate (taxi).Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
East Lake (5A) is a vast free public landscape: the Moshan, Tingtao and Mahan Forest Park (Chuidi) areas and the 100-km-plus greenway are all listed as free in Wuhan DRC's official 2026 price list and on the East Lake scenic area's own government site — no ticket, no reservation, open around the clock. Only specific sub-sites charge: Luoyan island ¥13, the plum garden ¥40, the cherry-blossom garden ¥60 in bloom season, the botanical garden ¥35, the peony garden ¥65, Happy Valley ¥200; boats (from ¥38) and the Moshan cable car (¥30 one way) are separate. Everything free here is free for foreign visitors too.

武汉市发展和改革委员会2026年度政府定价景区门票清单+武汉东湖风景区官方网站(whdonghu.gov.cn,2026-01-22漫游地图) Official confirmation: the DRC's 2026 government-priced list marks 磨山/听涛/马鞍山森林公园 as 免费 and 落雁 at ¥13; the scenic area's own site (whdonghu.gov.cn) lists Tingtao, Moshan, Mahan Forest Park and the greenway as 票价:免费 (greenway '全天免费'), with the paid sub-site prices above (梅园 ¥40, 樱花园 ¥60, 荷园 ¥10, 植物园 ¥35, 牡丹园 ¥65, 欢乐谷 ¥200, 海洋世界 ¥130). ⚠️ Seasonal note: the ¥60 cherry-blossom garden (磨山南门旁, 027-87510179) only charges during the blossom window (roughly Feb–Apr, peak mid-March) — that is a real crowd peak that overlaps a 'paid' window; outside it, the same grounds are effectively free to view. Traps: the lake is bigger than visitors expect — a full loop by bike is 2+ hours; ride the free greenway rather than paying for the sightseeing bus; the ¥1.5 Yangtze ferry from Zhonghua Road wharf is a cheaper river view than any cruise.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Wuhan attraction tickets at a glance
Official published prices. Where a season boundary exists it is named in the catch column — boundaries differ from site to site across China, and an official "off-peak" window can still be a crowded one.
| Attraction | Ticket (official) | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow Crane Tower | ¥70 adult (¥35 concessions) | No reservation; passport = buy at the window |
| Hubei Provincial Museum | Free (reservation only) | Book 5 days ahead; passport QR entry; closed Mondays |
| East Lake (Donghu) | Free areas; sub-sites ¥13–200 | Moshan/Tingtao/greenway free; no booking |
| Qingchuan Pavilion | Free by day (book slot); night show ¥68 | Free with reservation; closed Mondays; night extra |
The red wall at Metro Line 5's Simenkou station exit C frames the Yellow Crane Tower perfectly without a ticket, and the Yangtze River Bridge footpath gives the classic sunset view. The ¥1.50 ferry from Zhonghua Road wharf is the cheapest river crossing in China and the best five minutes in the city.
Getting around
The tower sits on Snake Hill at the river, closest to Simenkou station on Line 5; the Hubei Provincial Museum and East Lake are one district east in Wuchang, on Line 8. The two make a natural pair on one day, with the greenway for cycling between them.
Hubu Alley and the Jianghan Road shopping district mark the old foreign concessions west of the river — an easy evening on foot from the tower.
The tower's ¥70 day ticket and the "Night on Yellow Crane Tower" light show (from about ¥118, 19:30–22:00, without the main-tower climb) do not interchange. Qingchuan Pavilion is free by day with a reservation but its night tour is a paid show at ¥68. Concessions are Chinese-document based throughout — student IDs, resident IDs, military papers — so foreign visitors pay full price at every gate in Wuhan.
A day count that works

- Day 2: Hubei Provincial Museum (booked 5 days ahead), East Lake greenway by bike.
- Day 3: Hubu Alley breakfast, Jianghan Road concessions, river ferry.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a reservation for the Yellow Crane Tower?
- No — the city cancelled advance reservations at 55 of 57 A-level sites in November 2024. But the online pre-sale only accepts Chinese second-generation ID cards, so foreign passport holders buy at the on-site ticket windows. Tour groups flood in between 10:00 and 14:00; enter at the 08:30 opening or after 16:00 instead.
- How do I book the Hubei Provincial Museum with a passport?
- It is free but reservation-only, released daily at 17:18 up to five days ahead, and a passport booking generates a QR code you scan together with your original passport at the gate. Three no-shows in six months means a six-month ban. Closed Mondays; weekend nights run to 20:30.
- Is East Lake free?
- Mostly. Moshan, Tingtao, Mahan Forest Park and the greenway cost nothing per the city's 2026 price list, and none need booking. The exceptions are sub-sites like the cherry-blossom garden (¥60 in bloom season) — a genuine crowd peak, not a quiet off-season deal.
