Kunming: free tickets, paid transfers
Kunming's trap is the transfer, not the gate. Stone Forest waivers cover the ticket and never the ¥25 electric car — and there are no booths inside the park, so the choice is the shuttle or a three-kilometre walk through karst heat. On the Western Hills, only the ¥30 Longmen ticket charges; the eco shuttle, cart and cross-lake cable car quietly take the same day past ¥115. The lake itself — Dianchi, Haigeng, the greenway — remains free.
¥130 per adult, covering all five main sectors (Big Stone Forest, Small Stone Forest, Bushaoshan, Liyuanqing and Wannian Lingzhi) plus the Stone Forest Karst Geology Museum, valid for repeat entry over 3 days. Half price (¥65) applies to minors aged 6–18, adults 60–70 and full-time undergraduate-or-below students. Free entry for children under 6 or under 1.2 m, adults 70+, holders of the 离休证, people with disability certificates, active/disabled servicemen and retired military cadres. Prices re-issued by the Shilin Scenic Area Administration with effect from 1 October 2026. Open 07:30–18:00.

Shilin Scenic Area Administration (石林风景名胜区管理局) ticket notice of 27 September 2026, issued under Yunnan price documents 云价收费〔2018〕116号 and 云发改物价〔2018〕918号 This notice took effect 1 OCTOBER 2026 — 16 days before this research date — so it is the current rule, not a legacy price. The ¥130 has been the price since the 2018 reduction, but the re-publication matters: the free/half-price lists were restated in the Sept 2026 notice, so treat that as the authoritative wording. FOREIGN-VISITOR RULES — the discount list is Chinese-document-only in every case: 离休证, 军人证, 学生证, 身份证. There is NO passport-based age discount here (unlike Laoshan in Qingdao). A foreign adult pays ¥130; a foreign 8-year-old pays ¥65 only if the on-site desk accepts a passport as proof of age — do not promise it. The one genuinely portable rule is height: under 1.2 m is free regardless of nationality. ⚠️ ALSO NOTE: 石林 runs locality-boundary reciprocity deals — residents of Shilin Yi Autonomous County and Luliang County travel free on each other's sites from 5 May 2026 to 4 May 2027, and 2026 gaokao leavers enter free with their exam admission ticket — but NOT on Spring Festival, May Day or National Day. None of these apply to foreign passport holders. ⚠️ HOURS CONFLICT: the administration's own notice says 07:30–18:00 with 18:00 as last entry, and the operator's live sight pages repeat 07:30–18:00; several OTA guides publish 08:00–17:30 with a 17:00 last entry. Use the official 07:30–18:00 and tell readers to be inside by 16:00 regardless. Optional extras: electronic guide ¥30, human guide ¥160 per group. Getting there: high-speed rail Kunming South → Shilin West in about 20–24 minutes (roughly ¥18 second class), then bus 99 (¥10) or a ¥20–30 taxi; the direct coach from Kunming East Bus Station takes about 1.5 hours.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
¥30 per person for the Longmen sector, the only ticketed part of the Western Hills. Free entry for active/disabled servicemen, military retirees, the 'three categories' of martyrs' dependents, people with disabilities, children under 6 or under 1.2 m, and adults aged 60+. Half price (¥15) for minors aged 6–18 and full-time undergraduate-or-below students. Everything else on the mountain — the forest park, Huating Temple, Taihua Temple, Nie Er's tomb and the outer Sanqing Pavilion — is free. Getting up costs extra: the eco shuttle bus is ¥12.50 one way / ¥25 return (under-1.2 m free) and the in-mountain electric cart ¥10 one way. Open roughly 08:00–17:30 with last entry around 16:30.

Xishan District People's Government, Kunming (昆明市西山区人民政府) — published table of regular scenic-area ticket prices, 20 August 2026 This is a DISTRICT GOVERNMENT price publication — the strongest tier of source for this city and the one that settles the Longmen price (¥30, with ¥15 student and ¥30-era free-at-60 rules) beyond argument. FOREIGN-VISITOR RULES: the free list is again Chinese-document-based (军人证, 残疾证, 三属证件), but the 60+ free rule here is stated as '60周岁(含)以上老年人' without naming a specific certificate, and the 6–18 half-price rule says '凭身份证或学生证' — so a passport is a weaker claim at Longmen than at Laoshan. Budget full ¥30 and treat any discount as a bonus, not a plan. ⚠️ THE STRANGEST SEASON BOUNDARY IN THIS BATCH: the Kunming municipal government's cross-lake cable-car + Longmen combo ticket is priced with an off-peak window of ONLY JUNE AND SEPTEMBER each year (combo A, round trip: ¥150 peak / ¥120 off-peak; combo B, one-way: ¥122.50 peak / ¥102.50 off-peak, with online discounts of ¥15 off). Every other month — including October, right now — is officially 'peak'. This is a genuine trap: a reader who assumes autumn is shoulder season will be wrong, and a reader who assumes June is high season will also be wrong. ⚠️ TRANSPORT IS THE REAL COST: the mountain is closed to private cars on the tourist road, so the ¥12.50 shuttle each way is effectively compulsory, and the cross-Dianchi cable car from Haigeng is about ¥60 one way (roughly ¥100 return) with a separate inner cable car at about ¥40. A realistic all-in visit is ¥30 + ¥25 + ¥60 = ¥115 or more. Sunset is the point of this mountain, but the cable car stops running well before dark — check the '昆明西山风景区' account before committing to a sunset plan.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Free, and free for everyone — no ticket, no reservation, no document. Haigeng Park has been free to the public since 2015, ending decades of paid entry, and the Kunming government reaffirmed in August 2026 that it will stay free after the current lakeside upgrade. Haigeng Dam, the ring-lake greenway and the chain of wetlands (Haohong, Laoyuhe, Wangguan, Haiyan village) are all open at no charge. This is where the red-billed gulls from Siberia overwinter, roughly November to March. Boat trips on the lake are separate paid products (speedboats from about ¥95) and are not needed.

Kunming Municipal People's Government portal (昆明市人民政府网), 27 August 2026; and Yunnan Daily / Spring City Evening News, 11 September 2026, on Haigeng Park's 2015 free opening Two independent official sources, one of them the municipal government itself, both stating the park remains free — this is the cleanest 'free' fact in the Kunming file. ⚠️ CONFLICT RESOLVED: at least one OTA strategy page still lists 海埂公园 at ¥10 with under-14s free. That is outdated — Yunnan Daily's Sept 2026 retrospective states plainly that the park 'officially opened free to the public in 2015, ending decades of paid operation'. Write free, and note the upgrade works: the Haigeng Park / Dianchi greenway renovation started 26 August 2026 and will run in fenced sections, so parts of the park may be behind hoarding at any given time; Haigeng Dam, Haohong Wetland and the un-fenced areas stay open throughout. FOREIGN-VISITOR RULES: nothing to check — no document, no ticket, no app. This makes it the single best first stop in Kunming for a foreign visitor who has not yet sorted out a Chinese phone number or payment app. SEASON TRAP — THE INVERSE OF EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS FILE: the gull season (roughly Nov–Mar) is the busiest, windiest and most photogenic time on the dam, and it is also when the light is worst and the bird-food touts charge ¥10 a packet (supermarket toast is ¥2–3). Bring your own bread. The greenway links Haigeng Dam, the Western Hills, Haigeng Park, the Yunnan Ethnic Village, the wetlands and Haiyan village, so a free half-day on the lake can be stitched to the paid sights without a taxi.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Kunming attraction tickets at a glance
Official published prices. Where a season boundary exists it is named in the catch column — boundaries differ from site to site across China, and an official "off-peak" window can still be a crowded one.
| Attraction | Ticket (official) | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Forest | ¥130, valid 3 days | Five sectors + museum; shuttle is extra |
| Stone Forest shuttle | ¥25 electric car, both loops | Waivers never cover the shuttle |
| Western Hills — Longmen | ¥30 Longmen; transport extra | Free mountain; only Longmen charges |
| Dianchi / Haigeng lakeside | Free, no reservation | Free lakeside; gulls Nov–Mar; parts under renovation |
| Yunnan Ethnic Village | ¥90 day; ¥50 night | Commercial park; free lake next door |
Every Stone Forest free category (70+, disabled, 离休, under 1.2 m) still pays the ¥25 electric car — the park states plainly that ticket waivers do not cover the transfer vehicle, and there are no ticket booths inside. Budget the shuttle even on a "free" ticket, and buy it at the Visitor Centre before you walk in.
Getting around
The Stone Forest is about ninety minutes east of the city — a day trip, not a half-day. The Western Hills sit across Dianchi to the south, reached by bus and then the compulsory eco shuttle (¥12.50 each way) because the tourist road is closed to private cars.
The city centre is the easy part: Green Lake, Yuantong Hill and the old town walk together in an afternoon, and the Haigeng lakeside greenway is the sunset spot locals actually use.
The Western Hills' off-peak window for the cable-car-plus-Longmen combo is June and September only — every other month, October included, is officially peak, so do not call Kunming's autumn a shoulder season. And Kunming has no passport-based discounts in this file: every Stone Forest and Ethnic Village waiver is keyed to Chinese certificates; only the under-1.2 m height rule and the genuinely free public spaces are nationality-blind.
A day count that works
- Day 1: Green Lake, Yuantong Hill, the old town and Bird-and-Flower market.
- Day 2: Stone Forest — full day, shuttle included.
- Day 3: Western Hills and Longmen in the morning; Dianchi and Haigeng at sunset.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the Stone Forest ticket really free for anyone?
- The waiver categories (70+, disabled, 离休 certificate holders, under 1.2 m) get the ¥130 ticket free — but every one of them still pays ¥25 for the electric sightseeing car, and the park states that waivers do not cover the shuttle. There are no ticket booths inside, so buy the car at the Visitor Centre or walk three kilometres.
- When is the cheapest time to visit the Western Hills?
- Officially, the off-peak window for the cross-lake cable-car plus Longmen combo ticket is June and September only — October is officially peak. The ¥30 Longmen ticket is the small part of the bill: the compulsory eco shuttle (¥12.50 each way), in-mountain cart (¥10) and cross-lake cable car (about ¥60 one way) take a visit past ¥115.
- Is Dianchi Lake free?
- Yes — Haigeng Park, Haigeng Dam and the lakeside greenway have been free since 2015, despite OTA pages still listing ¥10. Parts of Haigeng Park are under phased renovation from 26 August 2026, but the dam and the wetlands stay open, and the winter gulls (November–March) are the reason to come.
