Harbin: the headline act is seasonal

Harbin's Ice and Snow World runs for roughly ten weeks — the last season opened in mid-December and closed at the end of February, and next season's dates are not announced until about December. Outside that window the headline park simply does not exist (only the indoor Ice and Snow Hall, ¥263, operates off-season), and what remains is a city of free walks: the Saint Sophia square, Zhongyang Pedestrian Street, and a reservation-gated island that still gives the best ice-and-snow photographs money can't improve on.

SEASONAL, winter-only park: the 27th edition ran 2025-12-17 to 2026-02-28, and the next season typically opens in mid-to-late December (2026-27 dates are announced around December — check before booking). Standard adult ticket ¥328/person; preferential ticket ¥240 for under-18 visitors over 1.2m, full-time students under 24 (Chinese student ID required), disabled visitors, and Harbin residents. Open 11:00-22:00. Free entry for children under 1.2m and seniors 65+ (Chinese ID). Foreign passport holders pay the full ¥328 — every discount category requires Chinese-issued documents.

The exterior square is free and open around the clock — the green onion dome and red-brick facade are the classic photo. The interior, now the Harbin Architecture Art Museum, costs about ¥20-25 per adult (student/senior ¥15, free for 65+, children under 1.2m, soldiers and disabled visitors with Chinese certificates), open 8:30-17:00 with last entry 16:45, closed on Mondays — the square stays open. Book via the '哈尔滨建筑艺术馆' WeChat account or buy at the gate; foreign visitors pay full price.

Free entry, but real-name timed reservation is mandatory via the '太阳岛风景区一码游' WeChat mini-program (daily cap 65,600 visitors; time slots 8:30-11:30 / 11:30-14:30 / 14:30-17:00, each capped around 21,866). Regular hours 8:30-17:00 (extended during holidays, e.g. 8:30-20:50 over National Day). Foreign passport holders can reserve with passport number — entry itself is free for everyone. In-park extras are paid separately: panda museum ¥49 list (about ¥46 online), Russian Folklore Town ¥30, sightseeing bus ¥25.

Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)

Harbin attraction tickets at a glance

Official published prices. Where a season boundary exists it is named in the catch column — boundaries differ from site to site across China, and an official "off-peak" window can still be a crowded one.

AttractionTicket (official)The catch
Ice and Snow World ¥328 adult (winter season only) Dec–Feb only; opens ~mid-Dec; dates announced late
Saint Sophia Cathedral Square free; interior ~¥20–25 Square free; interior closed Mondays, entry stops 16:45
Zhongyang Pedestrian Street Free, open 24/7 Free pedestrian street, open all day
Sun Island Scenic Area Free (reservation required) Timed slots; capacity capped at 65,600/day
📌 The dates are announced in December

The Ice and Snow World's season dates are only confirmed around a month before opening — the last season ran 17 December to 28 February. A trip in any other month means the outdoor park is closed. If you want the ice city with fewer people, aim for early December before the official opening or early March as it winds down; January is the peak with the coldest crowds.

Getting around

The city centre is compact and walkable: Zhongyang Pedestrian Street, the Saint Sophia square and the Flood Control Memorial sit within one district on metro Line 2, and the Russian-era architecture is the reason to slow down.

The Ice and Snow World is across the river on the Songbei island — a metro-and-bus trip north of downtown. Sun Island is on the same side, reservation-gated, and the Siberian Tiger Park next door is the winter pairing.

Budget for the cold, not the tickets

Every Ice and Snow World discount requires Chinese-issued ID — students, seniors, children, Harbin residents — so foreign passport holders pay the full ¥328. The park runs 5–10°C colder than downtown, and January nights hit −20 to −30°C: proper winter gear matters more than any ticket upgrade. The cathedral square is free but the interior is not: it closes Mondays and stops entry at 16:45.

A day count that works

  1. Day 1: Zhongyang Pedestrian Street, Saint Sophia square and interior, Flood Control Memorial at dusk.
  2. Day 2: Ice and Snow World — go at night, when the illuminated ice buildings are the point.
  3. Day 3: Sun Island (slot reserved) and the Siberian Tiger Park; Old Russian Street for souvenirs.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Harbin Ice and Snow World open?
Roughly mid-December to the end of February — the last season ran 17 December to 28 February — and next season's dates are only announced around a month before opening. Outside that window only the indoor Ice and Snow Hall (¥263) operates. Check the official channels in December before booking a winter trip around it.
Is there anything free to do in Harbin in summer?
Yes — the Saint Sophia square, Zhongyang Pedestrian Street and the Russian-era old town are free year-round, and Sun Island is free with a timed reservation. What summer does not have is the ice and snow festival itself; the indoor hall is the off-season substitute.
How cold does it actually get?
The Ice and Snow World park runs 5–10°C colder than downtown, and January nights reach −20 to −30°C. Budget for proper winter gear — insulated boots, layers, face covering — before any ticket upgrade, and keep phone batteries warm; they die first.
