Guilin in 1 day — pick your route
One day is enough for the city's highlights if you choose well. Guilin's centre is flat and compact, wrapped by the Li River and a ring of karst hills, so the trick is to stay on foot or by metro and save the long Li River cruise for a second day. Below are five ready-made loops from the city core — choose by what you care about most.
Set up Alipay with an international card and passport verification — it runs the metro QR, DiDi ride-hail and the shared bikes. Grab the free Elephant Trunk Hill timed slot (real-name, via the official WeChat account "桂林市象山景区") before you go, since it is capped daily. Wear real walking shoes; the hill parks have steep steps.
Route A — Sightseeing, the greatest hits
The postcard loop: the city emblem, a lit cave, a green park and the night-lit lakes.
- 09:00 Elephant Trunk Hill 1 hr — the free city emblem; cross to the opposite bank for the full-elephant photo. Bring your slot QR.
- 10:30 Reed Flute Cave 1.5 hr — taxi north (~$6–10); a cool 240-million-year-old cave lit in colour. About $12.70 at the gate.
- 13:00 Lunch Back in the centre — a Guilin rice-noodle shop, or beer fish if you want the local speciality.
- 14:30 Seven Star Park 2 hr — karst crags, a cave and a small zoo; the easy green half-day close to town. About $7–10.
- 17:30 Sun and Moon Pagodas 45 min — walk the lake; the towers glow after sunset. Exterior free, tower climb about $5.
- 19:30 Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise 1 hr — board after dark for the lit bridges; about $25–30. Walk the lakeside free if you skip the boat.
Route B — Karst caves & peaks (山水为主)
Less shopping, more limestone — the geology that makes Guilin famous, all inside the city.
- 09:00 Fubo Hill 1 hr — riverside crag with a cave Buddha and a city overlook. About $4–7; few crowds.
- 10:30 Jingjiang Princes' City 2 hr — the Ming walled palace and the 300-step climb of Solitary Beauty Peak. About $14–21 with the peak.
- 13:00 Lunch near the pedestrian centre Noodle shops and cafes are a short walk from the walled city.
- 14:30 Reed Flute Cave 1.5 hr — the cool, lit show-cave north of town. Taxi there and back.
- 17:00 Elephant Trunk Hill 1 hr — return for golden-hour light on the river at the city emblem.
Route C — River & night lights
The water-and-glow loop: the Li River front, the lit pagodas and the evening lake cruise.
- 09:30 Elephant Trunk Hill 1 hr — start at the riverside emblem and walk the promenade south.
- 11:00 Li River waterfront walk 1 hr — flat riverside path between the hills; good for photos and a coffee stop.
- 13:00 Lunch by the river Riverside cafes near the centre serve noodles and Western options.
- 14:30 Seven Star Park 2 hr — shade, a cave and lake views if you want green space.
- 17:30 Sun and Moon Pagodas 45 min — arrive just after sunset for the full glow.
- 19:30 Two Rivers and Four Lakes cruise 1 hr — the lit-water finale; about $25–30.
Route D — With kids (适合小朋友)
A zoo, a cave and a lake — short walks, big reactions, and flat ground.
- 09:30 Seven Star Park 2.5 hr — the small zoo and open lawns are the easy crowd-pleaser. About $7–10.
- 12:30 Lunch in the centre Noodle shops are fast and kid-friendly.
- 14:00 Reed Flute Cave 1.5 hr — the coloured lights read like a fairy tale for children. Cool inside.
- 16:30 Sun and Moon Pagodas lake walk 45 min — flat, lit and stroller-friendly after dark.
- 18:30 Easy dinner near the lake Cafes and hotpot around the pedestrian centre.
Route E — Easier pace for older travellers (适合老年人)
Flat, cool and lift-friendly — skip the staircases and let taxis do the climbing.
- 09:30 Reed Flute Cave by taxi 1.5 hr — mostly level walkways inside; the cool, lit cave is easy on the legs. About $12.70.
- 12:00 Lunch in the centre Stay flat — the pedestrian core is level and shaded.
- 13:30 Sun and Moon Pagodas lakeside 1 hr — a flat, bench-lined walk; skip the tower climb if stairs are hard.
- 15:30 Two Rivers and Four Lakes cruise 1 hr — sit on the open deck; the boat does the moving. About $25–30.
Skip the Solitary Beauty Peak steps and Fubo Hill's climb; use taxis between sights. The lakeside and the cave are the gentlest options.
Practical notes for every route
- Base yourself near the city centre or the Li River. Every Route A–E loop starts and ends here; it is the flat, walkable core.
- Metro + Didi, not long walks between districts. The Reed Flute Cave is 7 km out; a taxi or DiDi runs inside Alipay and saves the bus.
- Book the free timed slot. Elephant Trunk Hill requires a real-name reservation through WeChat; do it the day before in peak season.
- Carry your passport. Ticket turnstiles may read only Chinese ID; the manual desk handles foreign passports at every paid sight.
