Chongqing: mostly free, rarely unmanaged
Chongqing's headline sights cost almost nothing — Hongyadong, Ciqikou and the Three Gorges Museum are free — but the free ones are the ones with rules: a weekend timed slot for Hongyadong, a two-day booking window for the Yangtze cableway, Monday closures for the museum. Add the ¥30/¥50 cableway across the river and a ¥8 Great Hall, and a full paid day still lands around ¥40–50. The rest of your budget should go to hot pot.
The Yangtze River Cableway across the river from Yuzhong (Xinhua Rd) to Nan'an (Shangxinjie) costs ¥30 one way and ¥50 return — a government-guided price approved by Chongqing's DRC (发改委) and in force since 2025-01-01. Summer hours (Mar 1 – Nov 30) are 08:00–22:00; winter (Dec 1 – end of Feb) 08:00–21:00; public holidays 07:30–22:30. Book up to 2 days ahead on the official WeChat account 长江索道 (weekday tickets drop 07:45, holidays 07:15); your purchase auto-queues and boarding is by QR code — no ID card needed, which makes it the most foreign-friendly paid ride in the city. Ctrip even lists a dedicated 'non-mainland-resident' ticket at the same ¥30. There are no age discounts: only children under 1.3 m ride free.

重庆市发展和改革委员会批复(票价),经酉阳新闻网转载;购票规则见重庆中国青年旅行社2026年5月政策汇总 Price authority: 酉阳新闻网 states the ¥30/¥50 schedule follows the Chongqing municipal DRC approval effective 2025-01-01; the same schedule is quoted by a May 2026 policy roundup and matches live Ctrip/同程 listings (¥30 single, incl. a '非中国大陆居民游客' ticket type at ¥30). ⚠️ Discount conflict: a Ctrip user guide still claims window discounts for university students and 60+ seniors — that predates the 2025 reform; the post-reform rule (per the DRC-citing article) is no age discounts at all, only the under-1.3 m child exemption plus free entry and priority lanes for disabled soldiers/police and priority passage for serving soldiers and entitled family members. Booking traps: tickets are timed and quota-limited — in peak season the walk-up queue runs 2+ hours, so book 2 days ahead; off-peak windows are 08:00–09:00 or after 20:30; last ticket check 21:30, gates close 22:00 (summer). Combo tickets exist (cableway + 云端之眼观景台 ¥98; + English audio-guide headset ¥40). Season boundary note: the winter schedule starts December 1 — do not assume one citywide timetable.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Hongyadong, the 11-level stilted-house (diaojiaolou) complex on the Jialing River, is completely free for all visitors under the official 2026 policy — but on weekends and public holidays you must reserve a free real-name timed slot (18:00–22:00 night window) on the official WeChat account 洪崖洞, up to 5 days ahead; weekdays you can walk straight in. Open 09:00–23:00 with last check-in around 22:00; the façade lights run 19:00–23:00 and switch off sharply at 23:00. Every lift inside is free — anyone at the entrance selling a ¥10 'fast-track pass' is running a scam. The classic photos are taken from outside: Qiansimen Bridge, the Jiangbeizhu theatre bank, or the 1st-floor riverside walkway.

携程攻略(2026年10月实测)+新浪2026省钱攻略+重庆中国青年旅行社2026年5月预约政策汇总 Free entry confirmed by three independent 2026 sources (official policy per the Sina FAQ; Ctrip guides updated Oct 2026; May 2026 policy roundup), so no government price filing exists for a zero-priced site. ⚠️ Lighting-schedule conflict: an Oct 13, 2026 report says lights are 19:00–23:00 (unified since Sept 2026 as sunset moved earlier), while another 2026 Ctrip guide still lists summer 19:00–23:00 vs winter 18:30–22:40 — arrive by 19:00 and you are safe under either schedule. ⚠️ Elevator-fee conflict: a May 2026 roundup mentioned 'paid internal lifts ¥5/ride', but all fresh (Oct 2026) reports say every elevator is free and the ¥5/¥10 charges are touts — treat lifts as free. Entry logistics: navigate to the 11th-floor Cangbai Road entrance (Metro Line 1/6, Xiaoshizi), never the 1st-floor Binjiang Road entrance, or you will climb 11 floors; walk downhill 11→1. Food inside is overpriced; eat at Bayi Snack Street or Daijia Alley nearby. Beware any 'late-night special ticket' — the site closes at 23:00.Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum (a first-tier national museum facing the Great Hall) is free. Open Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00 with last entry 16:30, closed Mondays except public holidays. Entry is currently walk-in with a valid ID, but the safe route — especially on weekends — is to book a free slot 1–7 days ahead on the official WeChat account 重庆中国三峡博物馆; passports are an accepted document type, and the museum runs a multilingual service desk, bilingual website and 6-language signage for foreign visitors. Ticketed special exhibitions are separate (e.g. the 'Crossing Seas' fantasy-creatures exhibition, ¥49, running through 2026-10-18).

重庆中国三峡博物馆官网(3gmuseum.cn)+重庆本地宝(2026-04-27更新)+永川网报道(2025-04,外籍服务升级) ⚠️ Reservation-policy conflict: the museum's own site and two 2026 updates (bendibao 2026-04-27: '现在已经免预约,凭有效身份证件即可进入'; QQ news 2026-07-22: '免预约进馆,观众携带居民身份证刷卡入馆') describe a walk-in regime, while a 2026-10-14 travel account still tells readers to book 3 days ahead — the booking channel clearly remains open and is the safer advice on busy days; last entry is listed as 16:30 by the booking pages and 16:00 by one older guide (use 16:30, arrive early anyway). Foreign-visitor specifics (from the museum's international-service upgrade coverage): WeChat reservation accepts passports and foreign permanent-residence IDs with on-site QR verification; the gate card readers only read Chinese resident IDs, so foreign passport holders should pre-book online or register at the on-site service desk rather than queue at the ID-card turnstiles. Highlights: 壮丽三峡, 远古巴渝, 重庆·城市之路, 抗战岁月 permanent halls; free daily context; adjacent to the Great Hall and People's Square (flag-raising on national days).Reviewer notes (conflicts, traps, old values)
Chongqing attraction tickets at a glance
Official published prices. Where a season boundary exists it is named in the catch column — boundaries differ from site to site across China, and an official "off-peak" window can still be a crowded one.

|---|---|---|
| Yangtze River Cableway | ¥30 one way / ¥50 return | Government-set price; book 2 days ahead; no ID needed |
| Hongyadong | Free (weekend slot booking) | Book 5 days ahead on weekends and holidays |
| Three Gorges Museum | Free (special shows ticketed) | Closed Mondays; passport booking OK |
| Great Hall of the People | ¥8 adult (¥4 concessions) | Timed slot on the official mini-program |
| Ciqikou Ancient Town | Free (shows extra) | Free old town; open all day; no booking |
Hongyadong is famous for looking like a stacked village, which means the map lies. Navigate to the 11th-floor Cangbai Road entrance, never the 1st-floor Binjiang Road entrance — the lifts inside are all free, and anyone charging ¥10 for a "fast-track" at the entrance is running a scam. The lights cut off sharply at 23:00.
Getting around
The Yuzhong peninsula is the core: Jiefangbei, Hongyadong and the riverfront are one walkable district, and the cableway crosses the Yangtze to the south bank in five minutes. The Three Gorges Museum and the Great Hall sit on Renmin Road a little west — the same afternoon.
Everything else radiates by metro, but remember the geography is vertical: a five-minute map distance can be a fifteen-minute climb, and "8D city" is a warning about shoes, not a marketing line.
The cableway's discounts are gone. The 2025 reform removed age discounts — only children under 1.3 m ride free — and old guides still promise senior and student windows. Book two days ahead (07:45 weekday / 07:15 holiday release); peak walk-up queues run two hours plus. The museum's turnstiles read Chinese ID cards: pre-book on the official WeChat account (1–7 days ahead, passport accepted as a document type) or register at the multilingual service desk with your passport.
A day count that works
- Day 1: Jiefangbei, the Yangtze cableway, Hongyadong at night (weekday slot).
- Day 2: Three Gorges Museum, Great Hall of the People, Liziba monorail-through-building.
- Day 3: Ciqikou in the morning; a Sichuan-opera show or Eling Park sunset.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Hongyadong really free?
- Yes — the complex has no ticket. But on weekends and public holidays you need a free real-name timed slot (18:00–22:00) from the official WeChat account, up to 5 days ahead; weekdays are walk-in. All the lifts inside are free, so ignore the "fast-track" sellers at the entrance.
- How do I book the Yangtze River Cableway?
- ¥30 one way / ¥50 return is the government-approved price since 1 January 2025, and tickets release two days ahead (07:45 on weekdays, 07:15 on holidays). No ID is needed. Peak-season walk-up queues run two hours or more, so book ahead; children under 1.3 m ride free and the old senior/student discounts were abolished in the 2025 reform.
- Can foreign visitors enter the Three Gorges Museum?
- Yes, but not through the Chinese-ID turnstiles. Pre-book on the official WeChat account 1–7 days ahead (passport is an accepted document type), or register at the multilingual service desk with your passport. The museum is free, closed Mondays, last entry 16:30 — and paid special exhibitions are separate.
